The use of natural pain relievers and anti-inflammatories has become increasingly popular in recent years, but the case of methyl salicylate now shows that they are not always harmless.
The active ingredient from the group of salicylates (salts and esters of salicylic acid) will be subject to maximum concentration limits starting December 2022 and will be included in Annex III of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. Additionally, this substance can no longer be used in products for children under 6 years of age from this date.
As early as 2021, methyl salicylate was classified by ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) as a Class 2 CMR substance. Following this, the EU's Scientific Committee, with Opinion SCCS/1633/21, established possible limits for this substance across various cosmetic product categories.
Dangerous for small children even in small quantities
Methyl salicylate is commercially available in the form of ointments, gels, and baths, among other things.
It is a natural compound found in plant essential oils (e.g., wintergreen oil, birch bark oil), which is why it is also often found in perfume oils.
Salicylic acid, which forms once the body has absorbed the active ingredient, means that the products should not be administered over large areas and/or in high concentrations. Prolonged intake of too high a dose of methyl salicylate can lead to skin irritation, numbness, and even hallucinations, and is dangerous for small children even in small amounts.
Nölken completely refrains from using the cosmetic ingredient
Even when the first signs of intolerance specifically in children were being discussed, the Nölken company decided against using the cosmetic ingredient.
Utilizing the latest scientific findings, Nölken categorically excludes critical ingredients or substances suspected of being harmful. This ensures the long-term quality of the product and the protection of the end consumer.
Nölken Hygiene Products GmbH produces a variety of baby care products, among other things, which is why special care is taken. Any sign of a negative impact is identified as quickly as possible in order to transfer the new findings to the entire product portfolio.
